President Dr Mohamed Muizzu sent a message on Friday to observe the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to the Palestinian struggle for justice and the right to live in peace. The President conveyed that the Maldives’ support for the Palestinian cause remains deep-rooted and is a concern shared by all Maldivians across the nation.

In his message, the President highlighted the generational injustice faced by Palestinians, who continue to endure violence, dispossession, displacement, and oppression to this day. Adding that every passing day serves as a solemn reminder of the immense suffering endured by Palestinians, President Dr Muizzu stated that it strengthens our resolve and deepens our moral obligation to refuse to look away and that this injustice remains a stain on our shared history.

President Dr Muizzu called on the international community to unite and leverage its political will and economic power to demand an immediate end to the occupation, halt arms sales to Israel, and hold those responsible for war crimes accountable. He underscored the critical role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as a lifeline for Palestinian refugees for over 75 years, urging all nations to express support for its vital functions.

The President condemned Israel’s callous genocidal acts and repeated violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law, stating that the impunity with which Israel operates is not simply an attack on the Palestinian people but an attack on the whole multilateral framework. He reiterated that the international community must protect the Palestinian people and their rights and hold Israel accountable.

President Dr Muizzu stated that the Maldives believes there is no obligation – moral or legal – greater than the pursuit of liberating the Palestinian people. He said that for every Maldivian, it is undeniable that Palestine’s struggle is our own struggle, and we stand unwavering before the world in our commitment to ensure justice, dignity, and freedom are faithfully restored to the people of Palestine at every forum.

The President concluded his message with the firm belief that a lasting and sustainable solution can only be possible through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Earlier this morning, the President expressed his support for the Palestinian cause in a post shared on his official X account on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
